Charleston Restaurants: Church & Union

Updated: Sep 24

Our rating: 4.5 stars

Reservation required: No, but highly recommended

Dress code: Dressy casual

Price:

  • Reasonable for downtown Charleston

  • For 3 people, we had water, lemonade, a beer, a coffee, an entree each and complimentary dessert (b/c of celebrating a birthday) for just under $150 with the tip included.

Service:

  • Excellent. Our waiter was incredibly attentive. They brought us chips and hummus to munch on before our meals. Drinks were refilled promptly, plates were always being cleaned off our table, and we hardly had to wait for our meal and dessert. Very well done.

Food:

For dinner we had:

  • The burger (~$19).

    • The combination of sauces made it extremely flavorful.

    • The bun was fluffy and soft and the meat was perfectly done.

  • The 9oz filet (~$49)

    • Cooked medium and it was done perfectly.

    • The flavors were different but delicious

  • The ravioli (~$28)

    • Not your average ravioli shape. You could tell they were handmade.

    • The filling was cheesy and flavorful but not overpowering

For dessert we had:

  • Chocolate mousse cake (~$13)

    • Incredibly light and fluffy

    • Darker chocolate but not bitter

    • Decorated plate was beautiful and inviting

  • White chocolate cheesecake (~$13)

    • Very light and fluffy

    • Easy to eat this after the entree

    • Flavors were delicious and complimentary to the meal

  • Josh had a blueberry wheat beer which he would highly recommend

Atmosphere:

  • The vibe is business cozy.

  • One of the few things we didn’t care for was how close the tables were to one another and how tiny the tables were, but it’s to be expected in city restaurants.

  • The church building is so historical and inviting. The music is fitting for the atmosphere.

Great overall experience!

*Update*

We've been back to Church and Union at least two times from this original trip and have had an enjoyable experience each time. We have, however, found that the pricing has gone up considerably.
