Unmasking the True Cost of Travel

Updated: Feb 7

Planning a trip? Awesome! But, hold up – there's more to consider than just the obvious expenses. Let's break down the nitty-gritty so you can budget like a pro.

The Basic Cost of Travel:

The Basics: flights, food, accommodations, transportation
The Basics: flights, food, accommodations, transportation

  • Flights: Gotta get there somehow, right? Keep an eye out for good deals, but don't forget to factor in potential surprises.

  • Food: A hungry traveler is not a happy traveler. Plan your meals and budget accordingly – from street food to fine dining.

  • Accommodations: Whether you're into luxury stays or cozy hostels, where you crash matters for your wallet.

  • In-Country Transportation: How are you getting around once you're there? Rental cars, public transport, or maybe a good ol' pair of walking shoes?

Sneaky Cost of Travel:

  • To/From Airport Transportation: Getting there is half the journey, and it comes with its own costs.

  • Airport Parking: If you're driving, your ride needs a place to chill – and so does your budget.

  • Airplane Extras: Baggage fees, seat fees, and the secret fees airlines sneak in – because "cheap" tickets aren't always what they seem.

  • Currency Exchange Fees: Watch out for those sneaky ATM fees. Don't let them catch you off guard!

  • Overseas Transaction Fees: Your credit card might have some opinions about international transactions. Know them before you go.

  • Resort Fees: Some places charge extra, and they're not shy about it. Keep an eye out when you're booking.

  • Hotel Parking Fees: Yes, even your cozy hotel might want a little extra for parking. Budget accordingly.

  • Tipping Customs: To tip or not to tip? Figure out the local vibe before you find yourself in an awkward situation.

  • Tours and Attractions: You didn't travel just to sit in your hotel room, right? Plan for the cool stuff – and yes, it usually comes with a price tag.

  • Travel Insurance: It might seem like an extra expense, but trust us, it's the safety net your adventurous self needs.

  • Visa and Entry Fees: Before you jet off, make sure you're allowed in. Visa fees and entry costs are part of the game.

  • Adaptors: Know what type of adapters and converters are needed for your trip! I have two like this (paid link) that I often travel with.

  • Travel Wifi: This isn't a total necessity, but often you need some sort of internet connection in Europe. Every time I travel to Europe, I use HIPPOCKETWIFI and get a portable wifi that can connect up to 10 devices. You can sign up for their emails and keep an eye out for their 20% and 40% off sales!

  • Pet Care Fees: Fido needs love too. Factor in the cost of pet sitting or boarding back home.

Now that you've got the lowdown on the cost of travel, go forth and plan like a boss! No surprises, just epic adventures. Safe travels! 🌍✈️
